Book Presentation with Prof. Dr. Laurenz Lütteken: “Aufgehobene Revolution: Annäherungen an Richard Wagners ‹Ring›”

One hundred and fifty years after its first complete performance, Richard Wagner’s “The Ring of the Nibelung” continues to fascinate and challenge audiences. In his newly published book “Aufgehobene Revolution: Annäherungen an Richard Wagners ‹Ring›,” Prof. Laurenz Lütteken offers new perspectives on this monumental work.

In conversation with curator Franziska Gallusser, he presents the ideas explored in the book and explains how its different perspectives developed. The event offers an opportunity to rediscover Wagner’s “Ring” and to consider contemporary questions surrounding one of the most significant works in music history.

About the book:
In addition to essays on the “Ring,” the book includes texts on Wagner’s ideological position, the role of Goethe’s world drama “Faust,” religion and utopia, as well as questions of existence in exile. These incisive essays focus on the influence of the pre-March era and the revolution on Wagner, rather than on the later asserted, but never truly substantiated, “break” between the early and late Wagner. Instead, Hegel’s concept of “Aufhebung” is used to bridge the distance between revolution, failure, and utopia. Throughout, the focus remains on Wagner’s comprehensive understanding of music and its significance for the specific character of his scores.
